Overview
Sump pump service that gets tested before the storm
Sump pumps almost never fail on a dry day. They fail during a heavy rain or the spring melt, when the pit fills faster than anyone notices and a finished basement takes on water. Better Value installs, repairs and replaces sump pumps across the Muskoka and Simcoe County area, and we test the entire system, not just the pump.
A sump system is a chain: the pit, the float or switch, the pump itself, the check valve, the discharge line and where that line ends outside. Any one of them can take the system down. Discharge lines that freeze at the outlet, check valves that let water fall back into the pit and cause short cycling, and floats caught on a wall are all failures we see regularly.
If your pump is running more than it used to, cycling on and off rapidly, making new noises or is simply more than seven or eight years old, have it looked at before the next big rain. A backup pump or a battery backup is worth discussing for any finished basement.

Correct sizing
A pump matched to the actual inflow rate, not just whatever fits the pit.
Backup options explained
Battery backup and secondary pumps discussed for homes where failure is not acceptable.
Longer pump life
Correcting short cycling is the simplest way to double the working life of a sump pump.

Questions
Sump Pumps: questions & answers
How long does a sump pump last?+
Most residential sump pumps last roughly seven to ten years. Pumps that short cycle or run constantly wear out much sooner.
Why does my sump pump keep running?+
Common causes are a failed check valve letting water fall back into the pit, a stuck float, a pit that is too small for the inflow, or groundwater entering faster than the pump was sized for.
Do I need a battery backup?+
If your basement is finished or the pump runs regularly, yes. Heavy storms are exactly when the power goes out and the pump is needed most.
Should I test my sump pump?+
Pour a bucket of water into the pit and confirm the pump starts, discharges and shuts off cleanly. Do this in the fall and again before the spring melt.
Where should the discharge line end?+
Well away from the foundation, sloped so it drains fully, and routed so the outlet cannot freeze shut in winter.
