Overview
Cold climate heat pumps for Ontario winters
Modern cold climate heat pumps have changed what is practical in this region. Current inverter driven systems continue to deliver useful heat well below freezing, run efficiently through the shoulder seasons when a furnace is oversized for the load, and provide air conditioning through the summer from the same equipment. Better Value installs, repairs and replaces heat pumps across Muskoka and Simcoe County.
Two things determine whether a heat pump performs the way the brochure promises: correct sizing for the building, and correct setup of the controls that decide when the backup heat source takes over. A dual fuel system paired with an existing furnace lets the heat pump handle most of the season efficiently while the furnace covers the coldest stretches. Getting that changeover point right is where the savings actually come from.
For service, we diagnose refrigerant charge and flow faults, defrost cycle problems, outdoor unit icing, inverter and control faults, and airflow issues on the indoor side. Heat pumps that also cool should be checked twice a year, once before heating season and once before cooling season.

Questions
Heat Pumps: questions & answers
Do heat pumps actually work in Ontario winters?+
Cold climate models do. They continue producing useful heat well below freezing, and most installations here pair them with a furnace or backup heat for the coldest stretches.
Will a heat pump replace my furnace?+
It can, but in this climate a dual fuel setup, heat pump for most of the season, furnace for the coldest days, is often the most cost effective configuration.
Why is my outdoor unit covered in ice?+
Some frost is normal and the defrost cycle clears it. Persistent heavy icing points to a defrost control fault, low refrigerant charge, or restricted airflow around the unit.
How often should a heat pump be serviced?+
Twice a year if it provides both heating and cooling, before each season.
How long do heat pumps last?+
Roughly fifteen years with regular service. Keeping the outdoor coil clear and the charge correct matters most.
