Overview
Heating repair and duct work when the heat is not right
No heat, not enough heat, uneven rooms, short cycling, a burning smell or new noises from the furnace all deserve attention before winter makes them urgent. Better Value diagnoses and repairs heating systems across Muskoka and Simcoe County, furnaces, boilers, heat pumps and the ductwork that distributes the heat.
A surprising share of heating complaints are not equipment failures at all. Leaking, disconnected or uninsulated ducts dump heated air into crawlspaces and attics; blocked returns starve the blower; a dirty filter drives a furnace into high limit shutdowns. Duct sealing and repair is often the cheapest meaningful comfort improvement available in an older home.
When the fault is in the equipment, we diagnose it properly. Ignition and flame sensing faults, failed inducer or blower motors, control board and thermostat problems, pressure switch and venting issues and refrigerant faults on heat pumps all present similarly to a homeowner but need very different repairs.

Called about a problem at the cottage and they walked me through what to do on the phone before they even arrived. Excellent service.

Questions
Heating Repair: questions & answers
My furnace is running but the house is cold. Why?+
Common causes are a dirty filter restricting airflow, leaking or disconnected ductwork, a failing blower motor, or a system that is short cycling on a high limit.
What is duct sealing and do I need it?+
Sealing the joints and seams in your duct system so heated air reaches the rooms instead of leaking into unconditioned space. If you have hot and cold rooms or high bills in an older home, it is usually worth doing.
Why does my furnace keep turning on and off?+
Short cycling typically comes from restricted airflow, an oversized unit, a flame sensing fault, or a thermostat placed badly. It wastes fuel and wears the equipment.
Is a burning smell from the furnace normal?+
A brief dust smell at the first startup of the season is normal. A persistent burning, electrical or acrid smell is not, shut the system down and call us.
How quickly can you respond to a no heat call?+
No heat calls in cold weather are triaged as urgent. Call our office and we will advise on timing right away.
